Description
Wm. Grindley & Co., England "Keele" Scalloped Flow Blue Plate with Gold Trim,9-7/8" width. Flow Blue with Gold Accent. This antique porcelain plate is circa 1891 to 1914. There is overall crazing due to age.
There is a Flow Blue (slightly blurred) Printed Maker's Mark incorporating a globe and steamer boat circa 1891-1914. The use of "ENGLAND", instead of Tunstall, indicates a date 1891 and onwards. This mark often appears on Flow Blue ware.
This Keele Pattern has been mentioned as one of the Top Ten Flow Blue patterns on one designer's website! I can see why!
W. H. Grindley & Co (Ltd) was founded at the Newfield Pottery, Tunstall, England in 1880 by William Harry Grindley (principle partner) and Mr. Turner (the '& Co.'). They produced Earthenware and Ironstone China - particularly for the Canadian, United States, South American and Australian markets. In 1891 the company moved to the Woodfield Pottery, Woodland Street, Tunstall. In 1908 Mr Grindley set up The Grindley Hotel Ware Co. Finally, in 1960 the business was purchased by Alfred Clough Ltd.
The condition of this plate is excellent and appears even better than it's age would normally dictate. However, there is crazing throughout and the plate shows light staining, in the crazing, by the center design on the plate. The gold metallic trim on the edge of the scalloped rim also shows wear in spots. Finally there is an old adhesive sticker on the rear which I have not removed. These issues should be apparent in the photos.
Thank you for looking. I hope you will enjoy this beautiful antique plate for a very long time!
