Vintage model / diorama of a whaleboat by Nantucket whaler / museum curator Capt. George Grant (b.1857). Great detail with hand carved and painted whalecraft. Measures 20" long by 6" wide. Ex collection of a longtime Nantucket summer resident. American, circa 1935. Case (shown) is later made during the 60's / 70's and has the original postcard of Grant / Nantucket Whaling Museum.George Grant, son of the great Nantucket whaling captain Charles Grant, was born in Samoa during a Pacific whaling voyage. He spent many years at sea as a whaler and eventually became a founder and the first curator of the famous Nantucket Whaling museum. His folk art carvings of whales and whaling were sold in the museum shop and are highly collectable today.
