Vintage Carved Wood Folk Art Mermaid Sign, Maritime.
Cheeky hand carved, painted wood mermaid. I believe this was an old seaside restaurant sign as it was found in a Northern California salvage yard. Carved wood with cracks and repairs, and a very early iron anchor center pole. This piece of iron appears to be hand forged and is solidly implanted in the body of the mermaid. The iron appears well over 100 years old. The mermaid herself is weathered and worn. Two repair areas are covered in copper, her body has other stable cracks, but overall she’s sold. 42” wide from tip of hand to tail. 22” tall with iron bar. She’s 3” deep and quite weighty. If I were to guess I’d date her as a whole from the early part of the 20th century. Beautiful aqua tail, she has a serene folksy face. See photos. A great nautical sign for sure.
