The two Sailors Valentines were likely originally crafted together in the traditional fashion-- as a hinged box. At some point in the 20th century, these two halves were separated and framed, resulting in two frames each containing one Sailors Valentine.
The frames themselves appear to date to the early-to-mid 20th century, although the Sailors Valentines and the glass they are housed behind likely trace their origin to the mid-to-late 19th century. The folk art features stylized images of a heart and a sun, composed entirely from shells backed on what appears to be raw wool.
Previously owned, good condition. No damage.
