Description
Rare sailor-made shipboard marine folk art: USS ENTERPRISE - CROSSING THE LINE - MAY 22nd '78 (a souvenir of crossing the International Date Line, 1878) - an incredible drawing, reproduced on photo paper (presumably soon after, which the photo paper it is printed on is accurate for), showing five scenes on deck - the center one shows several men, one holding a blade to the neck of another, while beneath them a man tries to swim out of a tarp or sail that's full of water - I think it is a PLAY, entertainment performed for those on deck at the left; the other four images are titled: Hailing the Ship, At the Mast, A Refractory Child; and Getting Exempted. This was the fifth USS Enterprise, a barque-rigged screw sloop, launched 13 June 1874 at Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, US, by John W. Griffiths, a private contractor; and commissioned 16 March 1877, Commander George C. Remey in command. This souvenir is likely from the first voyage of the ship. Measures 6.5x5 inches, blank on the back. I can't find anything like this in the past 15 years of completed auction listings - it seems to be really rare.Condition: VG (dents and wrinkles, more obvious when tilted in the light).
