The Sheffield cutlery firm of Ibberson has been in existence since the nineteenth century. William Ibberson, the last of the line took over after WW II, and in the late 1940’s took on as an apprentice a teenager by the name of Stan Shaw. Under the tutelage of Ted and Fred Osborne at Ibberson’s he is pictured with Ted Swindon and Jimmy Unwin, in a photo taken there in the 1950’s. Stan worked his way up to “master cutler”, and by the 1970’s after his mentors retired, he was allowed to stamp his initials on the liners of the Ibberson knives he crafted.
Unhappily, Ibberson’s was forced to close their doors in the late seventies and Mr. Shaw set out on his own. And he did well. He was presented to the Queen in the 1980’s and presented her with a special creation, for her recognition of the Sheffield Cutlers.
This example is stamped SS- 74 on one of the milled brass liners.
The style is a “belly’ed” three blade “stockman”, after those produced in the U.S., (sowbellies). It is large almost 4 inches closed, and in “as new” condition except for storage wear, and some rub marks on the blades.
Factory snaps, opening and closing are present, none have been used or sharpened. The scales are without cracks or blemishes. They are tight to the liners which are tight to the springs.
Stan’s characteristic “back work” is on display on the blade backs as well as on the springs, with his trademark “Maltese cross” present.
I bequeath this lovely creation of Mr. Shaw to it’s next custodian.
