Offered for your consideration is a scarce vintage Schrade ST1L (L designating leather sheath) Tough Tool multi-tool pocketknife. Schrade was late getting into the very lucrative multi-tool market, introducing the ST1 in 1997, less than ten years before their closure. Their first venture into this market produced a unique multi-tool with several innovative features. This is an early version that has what I'm pretty sure is the original blade/tool compliment. This tool features side-folding pliers and it's a bit larger than most other multi-tools. Four of the ten blades lock with a unique notched tang design. The lock is releases by depressing the center blade on each side. This multi-tool has a very dedicated and loyal following due to it's toughness, size, features, etc. This tool underwent several design changes (when I mention Schrade I'm referring only to U.S. made knives, as I don't recognize the Chinese crap marked "SCHRADE") with three distinct generations or series of U.S. production. Each series or generation cut production costs for Schrade by decreasing the amount of labor needed. This is an early series two tool that has the full 10-piece (3 layers and 2 rivets on each side) laminated pliers head. The handle is marked "Pat. Pend.".
Schrade closed its doors in 2004. The Schrade named is now owned by Taylor Knives and are now being made in China. The quality is certainly not what it was during the many decades that the Schrade name was synonymous with fine American quality. This is a classic, U.S. made Schrade tool, offering full measures of the quality and performance that built Schrade's reputation as one of the world's most trusted names in knives.
Though I listed this as "Used", the tool shows no signs of use, carry, or sharpening and remains in excellent condition with no problems at all. It has not been buffed or polished and remains original. In fact, residue from the original factory oil remains visible on the tangs. It has thickened with age, making some of the blades tight to open. A couple drops of fresh oil will quickly have them as smooth as silk. Brownish-red spots in the photos are dried oil residue.
This is a very solidly built, premium-quality multi-tool knife that offers rugged durability combined with outstanding versatility. It has that classic feel of solid, sturdy precision and packs lots of capability into a compact, easy to carry package. The pliers are very substantial and feel more like traditional pliers than multi-tool pliers. The clip point knife blade has a combination edge and shows no use or wear. It remains very sharp and ready for immediate use. All tips are intact and original with no blunting, burrs, marring, or bending. This tool has an unusual hook-shaped blade with a very sharp edge. I'm not what the purpose was supposed to be, although it would be a handy blade to have for shaving edges, radiusing corners, etc. The file has a 3-way design and it has a notched end for opening that could also serve various other uses. The locking blades have solid lock-up and the locks engage with crisp precision. Lock release is smooth and easy. The frame is of sturdy stainless steel and incorporates ribbing for added grip and a hole for a lanyard through one side. The handle is free of any dents, marring, or damage no use or wear.
The tool measures just over 4-3/4" closed and 9-1/2" fully opened from the tip of the pliers to the tip of the clip point blade.
The leather belt sheath is the original and it remains in excellent condition with no problems at all. It was crafted from thick leather and the belt loop allows for either vertical or horizontal carry. The sheath shows no signs of carry and it's free of any damage with just some light soiling from storage as shown. The leather is completely free of any water exposure or any other environmental damage. The flap snaps tightly closed and keep the tool secure.
An excellent, original example of this long-discontinued and highly versatile, American-made multi-tool!
