Description
Hi, I am Steve Pfeiffer, author of the bookCollecting Case knives - Identification and Price Guide
. I have been collecting, buying, and selling CASE and other brands of vintage and modern pocket knives since 1973.
I am offering some fine collectible pocket knives for sale. See my other auction listings for more collectible knives.
CASE XX 5172 “Bulldog”. This is the first model, with the CASE XX stamp.
The CASE XX tang stamp is on the front tang. Pattern number stamp 5172 on the back tang. HAND MADE IN USA on blade back.
This is far and away the rarest 5172 Bulldog as it was only produced with this stamp and markings from early 1962 through the end of 1964.
I estimate that fewer than 1 out of 20 5172’s offered for sale have the early CASE XX stamp.
5-1/4” closed, brass liners, old style pinned CASE shield.
The blade has super strong snap.
The blade has no side to side wobble.
Nice genuine Sambar stag handles, great color and texture.
Similar coloring and thickness of stag handles back and front.
The handles have no cracks or damage.
The blade has most of the original factory finish, with a few light scratches, stains, and specks.
The blade has the factory edge – never sharpened.
Original CASE XX BULLDOG etch.
Minor tarnish on the backspring.
Includes the original black BULLDOG box. The box exterior is in excellent condition with a few minor scratch marks to the finish.
The box lid Has a minor split from age in the wood at one end – all tight not separated, not really noticeable (see last photo).

Some states have started requiring eBay to collect sales tax on items going to these states. eBay has a list of those states that have started collecting sales tax in 2019 on online purchases. This is nothing I have control over and the sales tax is automatically added to your total by eBay if you reside in one of these states.
